The Bluebells are Ringing...Outdoor Stitching Season is Here
I am blessed to live in Ireland. Ok...we'll complain about the weather but all that rain gives us lush green flora. Our forests, fields and hedgerows are full of native treasures. And for me the season is ushered in like the ringing of a bell with the arrival of the bluebells. They carpet the forest floor and make you feel like royalty to sit in their company (who needs a red carpet when you have a wild blue one!). But my favourite way to savour their beauty is to paint them in thread.
I've thought a lot about this flower and what it is to capture them. Their beauty is immersion. They surround you like waves and fill the air with their fragrance. You are immersed...in their deep, vast blue. And that's when you let go and imagine. Bluebells embroidery pattern grew from a love of immersion in nature and the desire to capture it in thread.
The Bluebells were always in my mind. As a child we used to play a singing game..."The Dusty Bluebells". Maybe you know it. We would weave in and out of the circle, adding one person at a time to the long train. My grandmother's garden was a flush of them too...a magical place I spent a lot of time as child. And then my children did too.
The Designer
Those memories are as fond in my daughter’s heart as in mine. And the greatest joy of this pattern is that Anna designed it! She’s been exploring art over the last few years and it is beautiful to see her bloom. I am mesmerised every time I look at this artwork…how she captured not just the beauty of the bluebells but the feeling of what it is to sit among them. The swirl captures that feeling of immersion among the waves of bluebells. And Anna’s design expresses such a beautiful truth about nature…spending time among it opens our imagination to capture it. Just weeks before we filmed stitching the bluebells we picnicked among them as a family. The experience formed her ideas and the artwork you now see. You can imagine I was nervous to select stitches and colours to bring her design to life. But working together on this was a delight for us both. Filming among the bluebells together, with not a soul around us but birds and butterflies, is something we will never forget.
The Design
Bluebells embroidery pattern has two colour ways. One expressing the beloved blue and green hues and one in soft white allowing the shape to take centre stage. It is a beginner friendly pattern with just 3 stitches. With stem, satin and straight stitches you’ll find this a calming, rhythmical project. The design works beautifully as hoop art for seasonal decor. Or as a feature on linens, cushions or gift bags. If you’d like to stitch our Bluebell design, you’ll find the pattern here and some FAQs below.
Just as the bluebells usher in outdoor stitching season, this pattern also marks the opening of the Wild Irish Flora Collection, a growing embroidery series celebrating the native flowers of Ireland.
I hope in this season you can venture into the outdoors too. And as you’re immersed by the beauty around you, I pray it draws out the beauty within you.
Much love
