Cows Parsley Embroidery Pattern

With every passing week of this season we see nature don a new floral dressing. There is a symphony across the forest, fields and hedgerows. Just as one flower cadences, another takes centre stage. I’ve been thinking a lot about how when someone gives you a needle and thread…you begin to notice more.
The Beauty of Cows Parsley
In the last few years cows parsley has been in my internal calendar. I’ve looked forward to a glimpse of it gracing the hedgerows each year, transforming wee country lanes and even the busiest roads into wonderland walkways. But this year, more than ever, I truly noticed. Capturing it with thread gave me a deeper lens to see its subtleties to celebrate. It does not shout loudly in that symphony. There is a musical term “sotto voce”, meaning under the voice (in an undertone) that so aptly describes its nature role.
In years gone by I have walked past the drift of cows parsley blooms unobservingly. Its presence is soft, like it’s been blended with an artist’s brush. But therein lies its beauty. We must slow our pace, still our busyness and incline our ear to notice nature’s whispers. And this year for me that beauty was worth stoping for.
A Family Adventure
If you’ve been following our Wild Irish Flora adventure you’ll know that my daughter Anna and I have been traipsing across countryside immersing ourselves in Irish blooms to capture them for you. But just before we were set to film Cows Parsley I received news I am unable to drive for medical reasons while my case is reviewed. Our small but efficient team of two doubled overnight as we realised that, if we were to keep chasing the wildflowers, it would now have to become a full family operation. But life has a way once again of slowing our pace to see the beauty we’d otherwise miss. We packed a picnic and trailed the Slemish hedgerows together, dodging tractors (and often the rain). But most importantly we noticed…we noticed nature, we noticed each other. And somehow donning the wellies and braving the elements helped empower me after losing my wheels.
Design Notes
As a designer, the graceful presence of cows parsley gave opportunity to play with subtle nuances. Small variations in stitch choices brought elegance and texture to this airy flower. Reverse chain stitch gives strength to the stalks, stem stitch lightens the leaf stems, while a spacious satin leaf variation gives air to the lacy compound leaves.
This pattern became an exercise in restraint and noticing. I found myself embracing simplicity and allowing small details, negative space and delicate textures to carry the design. The softness of Cows Parsley lends itself beautifully to garment placement. Rather than drawing attention to itself, it seems to settle gently into cloth, much like it settles into the landscape.
Making Time for Myself
That thread has allowed me to multitask, making beautiful pieces for myself. Some of you know I’ve been slowly building my wardrobe. It was the reason I started sewing and garment embellishment was the heart behind my venture into embroidery. I love how these art forms can weave into everyday life. There was something deeply restorative about capturing this flower on cloth to wear again and again. I made a white-on-white peasant blouse and an embroidered panel sleeveless top using the Cows Parsley motif, I'll be sharing with you soon.
Make Time for You
I hope you too are given the grace and freedom to notice wildflowers as they unfold where you are. If you would like to stitch the Cows Parsley pattern, you'll find it right here and I've answered some FAQs below.
Much love and gratitude,

I have been exploring this myself on garments, creating both a soft white-on-white peasant blouse and a more graphic placement on a sleeveless button-down top. You can see both of these makes and my approach to embroidery placement in a journal post coming soon.

Yes. Cows Parsley is part of the Wild Irish Flora Collection, a growing series of botanical embroidery patterns inspired by Ireland's native wildflowers and the beauty of stitching through the seasons.
