Christmas Decoration Tutorial
This simple garland is a gentle way to practise stitching and create something beautiful from scraps at the same time. Perfect for beginners or little helpers, this tutorial shows you how to use a sewing machine to stitch paper scraps into a charming decoration. Drape it on your mantle or wrap it around gifts for a creative touch of handmade joy.
* Suitable for beginners
* Uses basic supplies
* Great for mindful making

- Sewing Machine
- Thread
- Card or paper (old books or sheet music work beautifully)
- Fabric/thread scissors
- Paper scissors or paper punch
- 40cm ribbon/lace (optional)

How to Sew a Paper Garland
- Decide what shape you would like to use...I have made circle and star versions. You can freehand any shape you like or use a paper punch.
- Cut your chosen shape out of your card/paper. You can make the garland as long as you like or as your card/paper allows.
- For optional hanging loops cut 2 lengths of ribbon or lace, 20cm each.
- Fold the first length of ribbon in half and tuck the raw edges between two of your cut out shapes.
- With the lace end in first, sew along the middle of the sandwiched card pieces. (Tip - set your stitch length to 3 or above. Make a few backstitches at the beginning to secure).
- Once you've reached the end of the first shape you can prepare the next, leaving a few stitches in between. (Tip - you can use single shapes for the rest of the garland but if you use 2 you can add a magic extra step at the end).
- If adding loops - add your second length of ribbon/lace between the last 2 shapes and sew with the ribbon in last this time. Add a few backstitches at the end of your garland to secure.
Optional 3D Paper Garland Step
If you've used 2 shapes along the garland, you can fold them open to make the whole garland 3-dimensional.
Tips for Sewing on Paper
• Use a longer stitch length to avoid tearing
• Do not backstitch too heavily
• Change your needle after sewing paper
